A Look At Utilities Software

Utilities Software is a software tool designed to keep your computer operating and running smoothly. Utilities Software can help maintain and tune up computer hardware, operating systems or applications. Most major operating systems on computers have some sort of utilities software integrated into them. Here is a review of some basic utilities software.

There are three kinds of utilities software that is found on most computers. There is always some kind of disk defragmenter, disk checker and disk cleaner. A disk defragmenter detects files on the hard drive that are scattered or fragmented. When fragmented, there are spaces in between them on the hard drive. The defragmenter moves them closer together to increase the computers efficiency and speed. A disk checker scans the hard drive for corrupted files, or files that were not saved correctly and eliminates them. This helps the hard drive run at its optimum. Disk cleaners can also find files that are not used or essential for computer operation and ask if you want them deleted to create more space on the hard drive. These are good utilities software to have when your hard drive has a tendency to be too full.

Another utilities software found on most computers is a system profiler. A system profiler gives detailed information about the hardware associated with your computer and the software installed on it. You have backup utilities software on your system that allows you to back up all of your information gathered on your computer so if it gets corrupted or lost you can still have a copy of it. Backup utilities software can also restore your computer to its functioning state if anything happens to it. The manufacturer usually gives you a copy of your operation system, or if not the operating system can instruct you how to make CDs for system restoration if necessary. A disk compressor can press the files and information together invisibly to make more room on your hard drive also.

There are both free downloads and online stores where you can use and purchase utilities software. Here is a Utilities Software site that has freeware http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm. This site offers 46 free utilities for your computer.

For Mac users utilities systems are different. I use a program called Onyx. It has various tabs you can click on for computer maintenance. One tab is for parameters. That helps you keep things like your pointer arrow and scroll bar on the right side of the screen, there are sub tabs in parameters for the finder, which is like search bar for information on your hard drive, Dock, Dashboard and Expose, the default browser Safari, login and miscellaneous. It has a maintenance tab, which doesn’t defragment. What it does is verify and repair permissions on your computer, Run maintenance scripts, Reset links between documents and applications and other things, and Update/Optimize your system. There is also a Cleaning Tab, Automation Tab, Log Tab, Unix Utilities Tab, System Info.Tab and Preferences Tab. When my Mac acts sluggish I run the Onyx maintenance and it does the trick for me.

There are many different types of Utilities Software that are for all levels of computer users. I suggest if you are not technically orientated you find the simple user-friendly kind and don’t attempt to use the more advanced ones. You may accidentally remove an important aspect of your computer system software without knowing it. Some of the more advanced utilities software can be confusing if you are not familiar with it. Be careful; when in doubt ask someone who knows. It will save you grief in the long run.
